Piezoelectric in bypass street, Padang, west Sumatera

Electrical energy plays a vital role, therefore it is not exaggerating to say that the development of a nation depends heavily on the availability of energy, particularly electrical energy. In Indonesia, almost all power plants still use fossil fuels that are not only the source of pollution but also have very limited availability. Hence, it is of ultimate importance to find sources of energy that are environmentally- friendly and sustainable.
The use of solar cell as an alternative source of energy is growing rapidly but still too expensive for mass production. Another alternative is using piezoelectric technology in which electrical energy is produced from mechanical energy (stress and strain). Piezoelectric material has clear advantages such as inexpensive, widely available, and environmentally friendly.
In this scientific writing, literature studies on the condition of the bypass highway the piezoelectric material, and completed by mathematical calculation to realize electric power plant  using piezoelectric materials. Piezoelectric materials will be implanted under the asphalt concrete. The reason for the installation of piezoelectric material in the highway that the pressure received is very large because of the load caused by trucks, minibuses, and motorcycles. Pressure from a heavy load will generate enormous power that can be stored in central electrical energy storage and then connected to the electrical circuit of street lights.
Information on traffic in the bypass highway gives an idea about how much the potential of the installation of piezoelectric materials technology. Average number of vehicles passing the road is quite large: 730 trucks per day, 1256 mini buses per day and 4729 motorcycles per day (West Sumatra Police, 2016). If the masses of truck, mini bus, and motorcycle are assumed to be 1878 kg 700 kg, 105 kg, respectively. The total power that can be generated is 1093358,88 watts/day. The resulting power can be enhanced maximization  the probability of the car to pass through the piezoelectric system and by optimizing the design of the energy conversion system.
The obtained electrical energy gained enough to turn the 2700 street lights installed along the bypass on. Optimization of the energy conversion systems design and installation of more systems piezoelectric power plant in the bypass and the city road is expected to be able to supply part of the electricity needs of Padang city inhabitants.
